Landing a Sales Job with Job Boards

Mon, 11/17/2008 - 18:03
Landing a Sales Job with Job Boards

Navigating through job boards can be intimidating, but even
a novice job hunter can be successful by approaching the
task armed with the proper information and a plan of
action. First you must determine the category of sales job
that is your ideal. Are you seeking a specific industry?
How much do you need to make in order to support your
current lifestyle? Are you comfortable with commission
only, or do you want the stability of a sales job that
offers a base salary? Take your time with these decisions
as they will save you the time and effort you might
otherwise expend applying for jobs that aren't suitable in
the end. Be efficient!

Once you have your goals in hand, it's time to prepare your
resumes and cover letters. The key to securing a healthy
selection of job offers is customization. Choose the top
three industries you'd like to work in and create three
different resume templates to target each. Employers weed
through hundreds of resumes, so you need to make yours
unique and perfectly suited to the position. You needn't
rewrite the entire resume, just insert a few keywords
listed in the job description. Not only will this register
with the person perusing the resumes, it also puts you at
the top of the list when companies use a filtering program
to pull the most qualified candidates from a pool of
electronic submissions. This applies to the cover letter as
well. Don't send a generic cover letter to each employer!
Take a few minutes to insert the contact's name, say a few
words about the company, and list the key skills mentioned
in the ad. This is true for all job hunters, but especially
so for someone seeking a sales position. You have to be
able to sell yourself if you want a company to entrust you
with their product! These few minutes of extra work will
pay off big in the end.

Once you have your resume and cover letter templates ready
to go, it's time to format. Each job board and/or company
will have their own preferred method of submission. You
might be emailing your resume, faxing it, mailing it, or
uploading it to the job board. You'll need a version
created with a standard business word processing
application such as Microsoft Word as well as a text
version. You may be required to cut and paste your resume
into a box that doesn't support formatting styles, so the
text version prepared ahead of time is essential, else
you'll be reformatting each time you submit your resume to
a new company. The last task on the preparation list is
creating a table or spreadsheet to keep track of the jobs
you've applied to. It doesn't have to be anything fancy—you
just need a place to jot down the job title, job board
posting the ad, resume version submitted, and method of
submission and date. This will come in handy when you start
receiving calls from potential employers, because you want
the company to know they are at the top of your list. It
does not make a good impression when you have to ask the
contact which job he's referring to.

Now you're armed and ready to hit the job boards! Some of
the big boys you'll want to check out are www.monster.com,
www.careerbuilder.com, www.hotjobs.com, www.craigslist.com,
and www.headhunter.net. My personal favorite and a site
that has yet to gain much recognition is www.indeed.com.
Indeed is the ultimate in efficiency and simplicity. Enter
a job title and keyword in the "what" box and a zip code in
the "where" box, and Indeed will pull all the ads from the
major job boards, local newspapers, and private companies
in your area. You should also register and upload a resume
to any job board with that option. This allows you to apply
for jobs without the headache of uploading every time, and
several of the job boards will post your resume in an area
for potential employers to seek you out. No worries--most
sites allow you to post several versions.

Things to remember:

Start out with specific keywords in the search boxes to
narrow the selection to your ideal jobs, but don't hesitate
to delete and/or change the keywords to create an even
larger list of possibilities. You never know what sort of
gem might be hiding in the boards that didn't turn up on
your first search because different keywords were used to
describe the same things.

Keep track of applications so you aren't caught off guard
when you're called for an interview!

Be prepared!

CUSTOMIZE! This is absolutely the strongest piece of advice
I can give. If writing isn't your thing, then ask a friend
to help or invest in a professional writer to create a nice
resume package. The quality of your resume and cover letter
are the determining factors in getting an interview. You
might be the best salesperson in the state, but if your
resume doesn't reflect a strong interest in the company or
list your greatest strengths, you'll never get the
opportunity to prove that.

Happy hunting!

Make Big Bucks as a Business Coach

Fri, 11/14/2008 - 17:42
Make Big Bucks as a Business Coach

You may have heard of them - they re the people who
swoop into large companies and small businesses alike,
transforming them into profitable, exciting, and motivating
places to work. They mentor CEO s as well as first
time entrepreneurs, and with a detailed questioning process
can put them back on track to their dreams and make them
excited about what they re doing again.

Business coaching is the newest trend in the work world and
there s no doubt that it s a profitable,
exciting career to be in.

If you ve been playing with the idea of becoming a
business coach, then chances are you might have what it
takes to do this. Most people who are not interested in
helping others shy away from the very idea of business
coaching. Coaching is a very personal process, and the key
to being a success at this is having great listening skills
and a true desire to help other people realize their
potential.

What experience do I need to be a business coach?

You might be thinking that you have to have a hefty degree
in business in order to get into this line of work.
It s a common misconception that s totally
wrong.

For business coaching, the skills you need are personal and
emotional. Like we said earlier, you need to know how to
listen well. You also need the ability to motivate people
and lead them down new avenues in their thinking. You need
excellent communication skills and the ability to see other
people s vision for their business despite the state
it s currently in.

Many people don t realize that they already have
plenty of coaching ex-perience. If you ve ever helped
someone you know through a tough time, then you used
coaching skills to do it. If you ve parented a teen,
trained a fellow employee, or helped someone realize their
dream, then this is coaching! These situations are similar
to what you d be doing as a busi-ness coach.

Why do business owners need coaches?

What happens to a lot of business owners and CEO s is
that they get so caught up in the day-to-day workings of
what they do that they rarely have the time or energy to
step back and examine their vision and see if they re
on track to realizing their goals.

They can start to feel overwhelmed because they can see
their dreams slipping away, but they don t know how
to slow down their  busy work  enough to catch
up with up with them.

This is where a business coach comes in. Anyone that calls
you for help is probably in the situation described above,
and it s your job to help them get back on track for
what they re truly meant to be doing.

Still interested? If so, that s a good sign that you
might be a great fit in this career.

How do I become a business coach?

If you d like to learn more about how to be a
business coach, then one of the best things you can do is
take a distance learning business coaching course. Although
you don t need a business degree to do this, there
are some important skills you need to learn before you
start handing out busi-ness cards.

Taking a business coaching course can teach you everything
you need to know about the mentoring process and how to
motivate and inspire the people you work with.

You re a coach, and in order to be a good coach
you ve got to learn these important skills. Taking a
business coaching course is a great way to get started in
this rewarding career. Good luck!

Break Your Control Freak Habit and Catalyze Your Business

Thu, 11/13/2008 - 18:12
Break Your Control Freak Habit and Catalyze Your Business

Most entrepreneurs are control freaks. And that holds for
small business leaders and managers inside businesses
alike. You've spent a lifetime, since your school days in
fact, being rewarded for taking personal responsibility for
getting your assignments done. On your own. No one ever
said, "Great job handing that assignment off!" when you
were in school. And you spent 12 or more years being
rewarded for doing it all yourself.

Let me ask you this: Would you do just about anything to
keep your hand 'in' your business, rather than hand the
work off to others? Just like my client, Susan, you may be
sabotaging your own success.

One of the reasons businesses languish, and even fail, is
that the business owner or leader is doing everything
themselves. Whether we stepped up in responsibility over
time spent in our profession or started our own business as
an entrepreneur, we often think the business success
requires keeping our own personal grip on the reins of all
the activity. I say "we" because I know it myself - I've
struggled to decide what I was willing to hand over to
others. And Susan is facing that challenge right now.

The thing is, as any business grows, the sheer volume and
variety of things to be done outpaces what you (or I) can
actually accomplish on our own. If you try to run it all,
you'll likely run the business itself into the ground. Why?
Because, you'll take your eyes and mind off of the High
Payoff activities that should have your time and attention.

If you want to make more money, have more fun and have time
off too, you must get things off of YOUR to do list and get
your attention where it belongs.

Here's what I mean. My client, Susan, is growing her
marketing business. She has to hire junior level folks and
train them in the services her firm provides. That takes
time. And it may take weeks or months for each new hire to
demonstrate they can handle all the types of work that
needs to be delivered to their particular clients.

Along the way Susan runs into the same challenge over and
over - to incrementally hand over the client relationship
and all the work to the more 'junior' person who is
becoming experienced in handling the client. Susan's bump
in the road is that she forgets to step back to a leader's
role of empowering her staff. So Susan's company is even
more dependent upon her for all new work. Not only is she
diverted from going after new clients, she's standing in
the way of her staff emerging as business developers. They
aren't having a chance to build the client relationships
that will let them look for and propose additional work
with their existing clients.

Her higher value to her business, and her clients, is in
being available to solve complex and strategic issues they
run into. When she makes that shift, she'll be able to keep
her own attention on marketing and bringing in more
business.

You have choices for how to handle it in your role as a
business leader. You can hire people and train them and
hand work over to them. Or you can outsource it to
specialists with proven track records at handling the very
stuff you're ready to delegate. Different decisions, useful
at different points in a business's growth. But each option
poses the exact same challenge:

What, exactly, is the stuff that you should hand off? The
first way to identify it is that it's:     Stuff you're not
an expert in     Stuff you've never done before     Stuff
that will fill your calendar and not move your business
forward

When you get those items off your to do list, you recover
your attention and you can refocus it on the critical items
that demand your involvement.

In my own world, I'm outsourcing parts of my own business
activity. I'm gradually handing things off to my fabulous
assistant. And in time, as the business grows, I'll be
handing off more.

In my work with Susan and her team this week, one of her
staff commented that he found himself wondering what he
could do with his time for the last hour every day. He
wanted more work. I had everyone, including Susan, identify
5 hours of specific work they would take off their To Do
list and hand off to a more junior person. In this way each
person will take on new responsibilities and each will also
step up into more High Payoff action!

Be Guided with Dry Erase Calendar Boards

Wed, 11/12/2008 - 20:31
Be Guided with Dry Erase Calendar Boards

Homes and offices can be guided through the year with a dry
erase calendar boards.  Many families and businesses can
benefit with one of these organizational products.  Having
the choice of how many weeks or months that are going to be
covered is up to the customer.  With the choices available
those shopping for these products will find the perfect
guide they are looking for.  These items can be considered
guides because they allow for every appointment and event
to be documented where everyone can see it.  Placing this
item will also be important in making sure that everyone
knows where to find this information.

When business managers are in charge of scheduling
employee's organization is essential.  Using the style of
this product that will best organize employee request will
allow business managers to do the scheduling more
efficient.  Choosing from dry erase calendar boards will
depend on how far ahead they need to schedule.  Available
products range from one month to an entire 12 month period.
With plenty of room to write down names and activities
schedulers will benefit from the organization it provides.
These products can be hung in a convenient place for
scheduler's convenience.  Providing an organizational way
to keep track of employee request is a great guide through
the weekly schedule.

Having a planner to write down all the appointments and
activities is great for parents.  Being able to just look
up and write so everyone can see may be even better.  A
calendar that is placed where everyone can see may be a
great family guide through the week.  Guiding the family
through the week so everyone is on the same path may make
the road of life a little smoother.  Parents sometimes
already have a hard enough time keeping track of everyone,
so finding a product that can keep the entire family
informed will add convenience.  Mounting dry erase calendar
boards where everyone can have access to it will keep the
family on the same daily path.

Choosing the amount of time needed on each individual
product will not take a guide of any kind.   Just knowing
the amount of time that is needed is all it takes to choose
the right calendar guide.  With different styles
accommodating different dates finding what is liked as well
as needed will not take long.  Seeing a month ahead of time
and being able to write future dates will be a great guide
for office staff and for everyone in the family.

Taking advantage of organizational guides through the
schedule or through life may even free up more time.  To
get the office schedule done ahead of time leaves more time
to work on the upcoming deadlines.  Knowing where everyone
is and where they are going may give families a guide to a
little more family time.  Being guided through activities
and schedules allows for organization and productivity.
Choosing one of these items with enough space in each date
will give office staff and families plenty of room to
communicate.   Hanging a dry erase calendar boards can
guide everyone from one day to the next.

The 'Perception of 1ncrease' Gets You More Clients

Thu, 11/06/2008 - 16:55
The 'Perception of 1ncrease' Gets You More Clients

QUOTE: "People will go where they are given 1ncrease" -
Napoleon Hill

Too many solo-entrepreneurs, especially women, tend to
downplay their successes. They either don't stop long
enough to see how much they've actually accomplished, or
they're too shy to share with others how well things are
going, for fear of bragging. And yes, bragging is annoying
because it's usually done with the purpose of making others
feel inferior. This is NOT what I'm talking about today.
We're talking about sharing successes and inspiring others
through our own example.

You see, deep down, your clients and prospects WANT you to
do well. They want to trust that you know what you're doing
and that you're successful at it. If not, they may feel
like your "guinea pig", become worried that you may have
lost your touch and that perhaps they should go look to
someone else for expert advice. Here's what I mean: If you
drive up to a client's house in a beat up, dented, jalopy
of a car, their perception of you will be quite different
from driving up in a clean luxury car. It's part of the
Perception of 1ncrease.

Chapter 14 in Napoleon Hill's Think and Grow Rich addresses
this. Here are some excerpts from that chapter:

"And in so far as your business consists in dealing with
other [people], whether personally or by letter, the
key-thought of all your efforts must be to convey to their
minds the impression of 1ncrease. 1ncrease is what all men
and all women are seeking; it is the urge of the Formless
Intelligence within them, seeking fuller expression. The
desire for 1ncrease is inherent in all nature; it is the
fundamental impulse of the universe. All human activities
are based on the desire for 1ncrease; people are seeking
more food, more clothes, better shelter, more luxury, more
beauty, more knowledge, more pleasure-- 1ncrease in
something, more life...

The normal desire for 1ncreased wea-lth is not an evil or a
reprehensible thing; it is simply the desire for more
abundant life; it is aspiration. And because it is the
deepest instinct of their natures, all men and women are
attracted to [the person] who can give them more of the
means of life... Be sure of this, and convey assurance of
the fact to every man, woman, and child with whom you come
in contact...

Convey the impression of advancement with everything you
do, so that all people shall receive the impression that
you are an Advancing [Person], and that you advance all who
deal with you. Even to the people whom you meet in a social
way, without any thought of business, and to whom you do
not try to sell anything, give the thought of 1ncrease...

Feel that you are getting rich, and that in so doing you
are making others rich, and conferring benefits on all. Do
not boast or brag of your success, or talk about it
unnecessarily; true faith is never boastful. Wherever you
find a boastful person, you find one who is secretly
doubtful and afraid. Simply feel the faith, and let it work
out in every transaction; let every act and tone and look
express the quiet assurance that you are getting rich; that
you are already rich. Words will not be necessary to
communicate this feeling to others; they will feel the
sense of 1ncrease when in your presence, and will be
attracted to you again.

You must so impress others that they will feel that in
associating with you they will get 1ncrease for themselves.
See that you give them a use value greater than the cash
value you are taking from them.

Take an honest pride in doing this, and let everybody know
it; and you will have no lack of customers. People will go
where they are given 1ncrease; and the Supreme, which
desires 1ncrease in all, and which knows all, will move
toward you men and women who have never heard of you. Your
business will 1ncrease rapidly, and you will be surprised
at the unexpected benefits which will come to you..."

Perception of 1ncrease doesn't have to be all about mo-ney.
It can be about having the means for more self-care, for
more time to spend with your children, for the richness of
your life. The key is that you MUST be subtle in your
perception of 1ncrease. Remember, we're only talking about
doing AUTHENTIC marketing here. Nothing else. Dropping
hints in a Warm Update Letter, in your ezine, in your blog
or Facebook updates. There are so many ways that you can do
it authentically.

This is not about saying, "Nah, nana, nana, nah!" and
sticking out your tongue at your prospects. It's about
showing them what IS possible for them too, if they use
your products, techniques, services or by simply being in
your presence. It's about walking your talk, about being
authentic in your message. There should be no mismatch in
the perception. And for our types of businesses, the way we
live our lives is just as important to our prospects as the
way we run our business.

Clients want to trust that, if you've done it yourself, you
can do it for them too. If you haven't done it yourself,
then they're more apt to be hesitant about working with
you. So, the key is to subtly talk about 1ncrease in your
business, in your life, and also, in your client's lives.
It's about weaving it in GENTLY into the conversation,
being a verbal conversation, or your website, social media,
etc.

I can't tell you how many times I hear something like,
"Fabienne, when I 'grow up', I want to have your life."
It's super flattering and humbling, and I get exactly what
they're saying. The message that I share about who I am and
in my marketing is that, yes, mo-ney is important, and so
is family, a lot of downtime, doing things you love, having
meaningful work, connecting to your faith, creating yummy
life experiences and living life like you mean it. THAT for
me is richness and so I share what I'm doing to INSPIRE
others to do the same in their own lives, while fostering
the Perception of 1ncrease.

What about you? How are you sharing your "1ncreases" with
your prospects and clients? Have you given your clients and
prospects the Perception of 1ncrease or the perception of
flat-lining it through your life?

YOUR ASSIGNMENT:

Begin to subtly (non-braggingly) show 1ncrease in your own
life and business. A little bit here or there goes a long
way. Keep it SUPER authentic (otherwise, it's a HUGE
turnoff) and be sure that it's the truth (that shouldn't
even be mentioned here, but just in case...) Then, start
weaving it in your marketing materials. Start dropping
small hints here and there about your own successes or
those of your clients. You'll see people coming out of the
woodwork to work with you.

I made the mistake years ago of being a little too
over-the-top with this as I was learning my way around it,
and I went a bit overboard (oops). It's important to
remember to err on the side of too little, rather than too
much, but once you get the right balance, it becomes
priceless for attracting ideal clients, those who would do
anything and pay relatively anything to work with you. It
makes Client Attraction big-time easy. You'll see.

Why You Should Consider a Car Insurance Agent

Tue, 11/04/2008 - 14:17
Why You Should Consider a Car Insurance Agent

We all know the benefits of shopping around, no matter what
we're in the market for. But comparing prices,
familiarizing yourself with procedure, calling and asking
questions these are all very time consuming,
work-intensive projects. Sometimes it's easier to cut
corners and simply choose something that looks good, rather
than spend a month doing research. However, when it comes
to auto insurance, resist the urge to blindly pick a policy
and be done with it.  Insurance (of any kind) is one area
where a bad policy can be absolute torture, while a good
policy can be an answer to prayers. The easiest way to get
the best auto insurance service with the least amount of
hassle is through the auto insurance agent.

The choice between going though an agent for coverage, or
going directly through the insurance companies, is one of
delayed- verses instant-gratification. While it might seem
easier to simply buy an online policy, you're sacrificing
short term convenience for long-term service. If you have
an agent, especially a local agent, you can combine home,
health, and auto insurance into one policy that saves you
time an money. You also have someone who understands your
family, your situation, and your belongings, and can give
personalized advice. With an agent, you don't feel like
you're concerns are unimportant, and there are much fewer
botches and oversights.

That isn't to say online websites aren't a huge asset. In
fact, before you speak to an agent, online insurance
websites are a brilliant way for you to familiarize
yourself with the competition. An entire industry of
websites such as Geico, Progressive, and E-Surance provide
and compare insurance quotes within seconds. This is a good
idea to get a feeling for rates and prices, so you'll know
if an insurance agent is getting you the right deal.

Choosing to use a car insurance agent doesn't mean you
don't have to shop around. You still have to pick an auto
insurance company, which is why online websites are so
useful. Larger, more comprehensive companies offer a great
way to put all of your insurance needs under one roof, with
the minimum amount of hassle. You might save more money if
you go to a questionable online insurance site, but if
there's an accident, you don't want to be told there's a
problem with your policy. You want to speak to your agent,
someone who knows you, and can address your concerns. The
price is worth it.

cars.  Combining those two means he gets to do what he
enjoys when helping others with auto insurance on line.

The Affect of Obama's Economical Policy on Your Home Based Business

Sun, 10/26/2008 - 20:17
The Affect of Obama's Economical Policy on Your Home Based Business

Obama will extend the 10, 15, 25 and 28 percent tax
brackets while restoring the Clinton administration's 36
and 39.6 percent brackets at the upper end. Obama will also
provide a $1,000 energy rebate to American families? Taxing
Angel investors more will not deter their entrepreneurial
spirit. Taxes are not punitive. The belief they are and the
refusal to maintain infrastructure on top of an insistence
on a huge military constantly in some fight and nobody
paying for it is why we are in such a mess.

Tax reform involves closing loopholes and lowering the
rates. But Obama proposes to increase the rates and create
new loopholes through the tax credits. Tax credit is not a
tax break. Although it may be different for corporate
taxes, in personal taxes it counts as paid taxes, and can
allow people to get more than they paid in.

Politicians spent money they did not have. Lenders tricked
people into buying home they could not afford and some
folks knew they could not afford them and bought them
anyway.

Goolsbee, in particular, has taken direct aim at the
conservative movement's biggest economic policy achievement
of the past three decades: the sharp reduction in marginal
tax rates, especially the top personal income tax rate. He
is a leader in the liberal onslaught against the Laffer
curve, producing research to show that income tax cuts "for
high-income taxpayers likely gave windfalls to those whose
incomes were already sharply rising because of broader
market forces." Goolsbee, who is in his late 30s, met Obama
through their shared University of Chicago network. He is a
political novice on national economic policy issues, but is
firmly in the capitalist US mainstream.

McCain does not lie very good. Word is out that the bail
out is going to cost 2.5 trillion and the congress does not
want the people to know and panic. McCain gave a speech
today which was still focused on tax cuts. On the other
hand, Obama is discussing the things that people care
about, their homes, their jobs, and their retirement.
McCain opposed this because Bush threatened to veto the
bill and John wanted to be seen standing at the side of his
good friend GW. If that bill had been enacted this current
crisis- started by Fan and Fred- would have been greatly
minimized or even avoided.

McCain is overstating how much small business income would
be affected by Sen. Obama's tax plan. McCain's justices are
likely to join the conservative crusade against the power
of Congress. They could be expected to strike down, or
sharply limit, federal power to protect clean air and
water; ensure food and drug safety; safeguard workers; and
prohibit discrimination against women and minorities.
McCain also appeared to allude to recent statements from
Rep. John Murtha, D-Johnstown, in which he had suggested
that Western Pennsylvania was a racist area, and, after
apologizing for that, noted that the region had past marked
by "red neck" traditions.

Secondly, the growth in GDP was primarily fueled by
consumer spending made possible by taking out equity
mortgages against rising home values -- helping to fuel the
housing bubble. A secondary stimulus was massive government
spending, by a Republican-controlled Congress no less, on a
par with LBJ's Great Society days. Second, no one below
$250,000 would be affected. This is a new rate.

Senator McCain's top economic advisor actually said the
other day that they have no plan to invest in college
affordability because we can't have a giveaway to every
special interest. Well I don't think the young people of
America are a special interest -- they are the future of
this country. Senator McCain's tax cuts would primarily
benefit those with very high incomes, almost all of whom
would receive large tax cuts that would, on average, raise
their after-tax incomes by more than twice the average for
all households. Many fewer households at the bottom of the
income distribution would get tax cuts and those whose
taxes fall would, on average, see their after-tax income
rise much less.

Yes, I am sure he will get input from other economic
advisers but ultimately his top economic adviser will tell
Obama which way to go. Otherwise why hire Furman as his top
economic adviser.

Costs: Locate Ideas for Greater Reductions in More Places

Mon, 10/20/2008 - 05:14
Costs:  Locate Ideas for Greater Reductions in More Places

"The rich-proud cost of outworn buried age."

-- William Shakespeare

"We might as reasonably dispute whether it is the upper or
the lower blade of a pair of scissors that cuts a piece of
paper, as whether value is governed by utility or the cost
of production."

-- Alfred Marshall

Look back at the costs of operating your business from
several years ago.

-What indispensable costs from those days do you easily do
without today?

-What prevented you from eliminating those
once-indispensable costs sooner?

If you are like most people, it is that you assumed that
your business model and ways of operating should be
unchanged.  Change that business model, and costs suddenly
become redundant in all sorts of unexpected places.

For example, when a business goes from full service to
self-service, the number of service-providing employees
predictably drops.  Without changing that model, it might
have been a disaster to reduce the number of
service-providing employees.

Few are reluctant to reduce costs except when the human
price is high in terms of cutting jobs or making working
conditions less tolerable.  At the same time, few are
excited about seeking out ways to lower costs levels.

To many, this activity is like doing another fire drill
when there seems little likelihood of a future fire.  In
addition, finding new, large cost reductions is often a
more difficult task than locating more benefits at the
current price or creating new price structures that
stimulate demand.  In part, this is because costs are
always scrutinized, so there are fewer stones to turn over
for the first time.  In part, the difficulty ties back to
misconceptions about how to find large cost reductions.

In addition, focusing on the current business model as the
context for reducing costs is like looking for dark-colored
items wearing dark glasses on a moonless night.  You won't
see most of the possibilities.

Despite all the attention that cost reduction seems to
receive, it is clear that normal cost reductions rarely
cause a company to gain much ground on the industry's
low-cost leader.  So most of the announcements you read
about companies slashing costs amount to running on a
squirrel cage of speeding shifts in industry practices.
After lots of activity and pain, companies usually end up
staying in the same cost position relative to competitors
as they were a year before.

Routinely, however, new business models do create large
cost reductions that boost margins and profit growth in
sustainable ways.  Historically, most of these new business
models have come from start-ups which were funded by
entrepreneurs and venture capitalists on the premise that
there was a better way of serving needs that the current
suppliers were ignoring.

Consider the advantages that mighty Microsoft has had in
software design and production for personal computers for
over 20 years.  Microsoft's muscle is so great that it lost
its antitrust trial concerning the way it competed with
Netscape, which had been all but wiped out in the Web
browser market even though Netscape was the original
industry leader and that Netscape literally gave the
product away for free.  Microsoft's Explorer product was
not only free, it came already loaded on new machines so
the consumer saved time by using the unavoidable Microsoft
offering.  How could anyone hope to develop costs low
enough to vie with such a powerhouse?

Red Hat did, and shows signs now of creating a still lower
cost business model than Microsoft's for personal computer
and Web server operating systems.  Red Hat's software is
only partially developed by the company itself.  The kernel
of its offerings was developed and is now maintained by
programmers who did not and do not now charge for their
time and effort.

The operating system is called Linux, and has drawn upon
the talents of hundreds of the world's most innovative
software designers.  In the process, many customers find
that Linux (an improved version of the original UNIX
software) works better and is easier to work with than the
Microsoft alternatives.  Why do such programmers provide
such a favor to Red Hat?  Primarily because they want to be
able to have access to the source code to the software in
order to create applications that are more pleasing and
effective for their own use.

Microsoft refuses to allow such source code access.  While
it is too soon to know, it may be that basing one's
business on open source software is a superior business
model for producing the best products and services at the
lowest cost.

Notice that this model has much in common with the Goldcorp
approach to finding more gain and low costs through open
competitions with freely shared information.  Yet few
companies even consider how to access top talent in such
inexpensive ways.  Instead, they compete to hire these
people for top dollar as full-time employees.

The biggest challenge facing cost reducers is hidden from
them.  They do not know where to look!  Like the person who
has misplaced his or her keys, they keep looking in all the
same places.

Want to Spend the 2nd Half of Your Life YOUR Way?

Thu, 10/16/2008 - 05:13
Want to Spend the 2nd Half of Your Life YOUR Way?

"All you need in this life is ignorance and confidence;
then success is sure." Mark Twain

Are you considering self employment in order to live life
they way you'd like? Nearly one in five pre-retirees say
they want to start their own business after retirement. And
many of you are chomping at the bit and want to start now
-to heck with waiting for retirement. Although 80% of
adults say they would work even if they didn't have to,
it's a sad fact that the majority of them can't wait to
leave their current jobs and get home.

I knew nearly 2 years before I left my academic job that
something was wrong. I, a normally positive, cheerful
person, was getting angry at work. Often. In thinking about
what the heck was happening, I realized it was nothing "out
there" that had changed. It was me. While my career had
been extraordinarily satisfying for 15 years, I had
outgrown it. Divine discontent was knocking at my door -in
the form of anger. I needed to listen!

I worked with a coach for a year, weekly unpeeling all the
fears and imagined obstacles that kept me from leaving this
work I no longer loved. And then, I took the leap! And
survived. More than survived, I thrived. And continue to do
so.

One of the questions, I asked during that year long soul
searching, nail biting process, was "do I have what it
takes to be self-employed?" I had no role models in my
family to "prove" to me that it was possible -that I was
cut from the right cloth for this type of adventure. I did
some researching and here's what others told me about what
it takes to be self employed. I'll give you my opinion
following each point.

1. You must have the ability to believe you can be
successful.

I agree with this. Self employed people learn to take risks
and become decisive. These qualities are not innate; no
person is born an entrepreneur. I believe that your mindset
is one of the most important keys to successful self
employment.

2. You must love to learn and continue doing so.

Yes! In order to keep growing and to thrive in your
business, you will need to learn from your mistakes. You
will find that there are just some things that don't work -
that's fine - try something else!

You will learn from watching others in your line of work
that are successful. Learn the best parts of their methods,
but beware of trying to imitate. It is your quirky
uniqueness that will make you successful.

You will learn from reading and research. Read
inspirational material of others who are successful. Read
books from people who have information about how to
innovate in your work.

3. Here's one I don't agree with. Many checklists of
entrepreneurial qualities say that you must be a
hardworking person and that you must put in more hours than
you did as a person employed by someone else. This is a
pervasive, yet faulty mindset that many self employed
people operate under. If you are beginning a new business,
while you maintain your current employment, yes, you may
work more hours for a time.

However, once you take the leap, I encourage you to set an
intention that you will work smart and stay focused on what
brings you close to the money. If you don't fritter away
your hours on actions that are not essential, you can work
less hours than you previously did and make equal or more
money.

I can speak from experience! I previously had to work hours
that didn't suit me in order to accommodate the hours of
the busy physicians I worked with -I had to be at early
morning and late night meetings. I now start my day more
slowly, rarely work more than 30 hours a week and make
twice as much as did in my previous job.

Here's an action step to take after reading this article.
Take some time to write out a vision of your ideal day in
your new, self employed world. Make it as vivid as
possible, using as many of your senses as you can. Where
are you, what is around you, what sounds, smells, tastes?
Who do you work with? What emotions do they have, do you
have after your work together? This is a powerful exercise!
Just ignore your doubts and "yeah buts" when they raise up
to ask you if you are out of your mind. Read that vision
each morning. If you decide to put it away after a week or
a month, mark your calendar for a date six months from now
to remind you to revisit your vision. There's a good chance
you will be amazed at the progress you have made toward
having that ideal.

How safe are Teflon and other Fluoropolymer Coatings?

Mon, 10/13/2008 - 07:24
How safe are Teflon  and other Fluoropolymer Coatings?

Teflon  was discovered nearly 70 years ago and has
been used safely on cookware for over 40 years.
Teflon has been used since the 1940's on automotive,
military, personal use, and industrial products. Many
Teflon  and other fluoropolymer coatings are permitted
for use in contact with food in compliance with the Federal
Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act and applicable regulations,
including 21 CFR 175,300.

There is one known health hazard associated with Teflon,
inhalation of fumes produced during degradation of the
coating. Temporary flue-like symptoms (known as polymer
fume fever) can occur when the fumes from overheated
fluoropolymers are inhaled. Typically the fluoropolymer
coating would have to be heated to an excess of 500 F
to begin to deteriorate. Fumes are not typically given off
until the fluoropolymer significantly decomposes
(660 F). Fats, butter, and cooking oil tend to scorch
and smoke at only 400 F. When used properly
Teflon  non-stick products are safe.

DuPont states "Teflon  cookware is formulated and
quality tested to resist peeling or chipping, which will
only occur if cookware is misused. However, in the event
that particles from Teflon  cookware are accidentally
eaten, there is no danger. These particles are non-toxic.
If eaten, they pass directly through the body and are not
absorbed. The FDA has stated that eating Teflon
particles does not pose a health hazard".

In another matter, for the past six years the EPA and
industry have been studying PFOA to determine what if any
human health effects exist. PFOA is a polymerization aid,
not an ingredient, used to help make fluoropolymers. It is
largely removed during the final steps of polymer
production and by the high temperatures used when most
fluoropolymers are made into finished products. The EPA has
said, "Although our risk assessment activities are not
complete and new data may change the current picture, to
date EPA is not aware of any studies specifically relating
current levels of PFOA exposure to human health effects".
The EPA has also stated "At the present time, EPA does not
believe there is any reason for consumers to stop using any
products because of concerns about PFOA".

Over the past six years there have been rumors,
misconceptions, and unsubstantiated claims regarding PFOA,
its safety, and its effect on Teflon  and other
fluoropolymer coatings. In order to reduce concerns related
to PFOA, industry has improved manufacturing processes and
controls to reduce the use and emissions of PFOA. The EPA
and industry have a stated goal of virtually eliminating
the release of PFOA into the environment by 2015.

Social Media Optimatization - SMO Techniques

Mon, 10/13/2008 - 07:02
Social Media Optimatization - SMO Techniques

In this competitive business world, you have to be able to
know the latest technology that can allow your business to
thrive.  You need to know the best way to get your name out
there, and in this day and age of high technology, one of
the most powerful tools you can use to do just that is with
social media optimization.

Social media optimization is a set of methods that generate
advertising through the use of social media through online
communities, and community websites like blogs or forums
for example.  Many people use blogs and forums for their
social media optimization method. Methods of SMO include
adding RSS feeds, as well blogging and forums, where people
can comment and connect. This is essential for it to be
successful as this is the building block of the whole
process.  The more people are social they more they can
relate to and build a trusting relationship as well Social
media optimization is related to search engine marketing,
but differs in many ways, though improved search ranking is
also a benefit of successful SMO.

Some great ways to make the most of your social media
optimization plan can enlist the following methods:

1. Start by creating your profile in certain communities
and start connecting with others.  This is a great way to
build the two way communication and establish trust at the
same time. This is one of the fastest ways to get the
communication ball rolling.

2. Give your business a blog. This is a very powerful
social media tool that can really make the most of your
time in the easiest way possible. These are essential for
businesses these days and prove to be very beneficial to
anyone who may use them and prove to be an extremely
powerful tool to aid your business in succeding.

3. Consider podcasting.  This is a great way to get your
voice heard and increase the publicity of your business.
This simple is a recording of your thoughts rather than
written commentary and can really aid in building your
social media optimization process as well.

You may wonder why bother with all this but you must
understand that is the latest way to make your business a
success.  People love to connect and feel like they are not
alone; regardless of the situation, and in the process you
may just build your online empire.

Make Concrete Blocks--A Solid Money Maker

Mon, 10/13/2008 - 06:32
Make Concrete Blocks--A Solid Money Maker

Making concrete blocks is a solid business opportunity. Low
cost startup from home and constant demand for the product
make this an excellent way to start your own business. When
you make concrete blocks you are making a product which is
in constant demand everywhere.

Concrete blocks are used in building everything from huge
buildings right down to the smallest backyard compost box.
Demand is constant and will never die as long as building
is going on. You can count on a good market for your cement
blocks. You are not making widgets which go out of fashion
in a short time.

If you are looking for a good business to start, with very
little investment, concrete block manufacturing is the
opportunity for you. You can start from home working with
hand molds in your garage. You can easily turn out 100
blocks per day this way. Later when your business has grown
and you need to make more cement blocks,to supply your
customers, you can acquire or build a concrete block making
machine which can turn out hundreds of blocks in a working
day.

Hand molds are made from plywood and sheet metal. They are
easy to make from available plans. You simply fill the
molds with the appropriate concrete mix and turn out the
blocks to dry. Plans with instructions are available to
show how this is done.  All you need to get started are
some plywood and sheet metal to make the molds and a supply
of Portland cement, sand, gravel and water. All of these are
easy to obtain locally at your lumberyard.

When the time comes to make more concrete blocks than you
can turn out, with hand molds, you will need a machine to
make the blocks with. There are a number of commercially
made machines available. They do a good job but are quite
pricey. Buy one if you can afford it and it will pay for
itself with increased productivity. The cheaper alternative
is to build your own machine.

Build your own machine? Yes you can build an excellent
machine from new or used auto parts and a few odds and
ends. It is not hard to build and,if you can,t weld, your
local welding shop can do that part of it for you at a
reasonable cost. This machine can turn out 800 blocks in a
working day and is as good as or better than the commercial
models.

Making your own machine is reasonably easy if you have any
mechanical ability. The saving over purchase of a machine
is big. You can also build a smaller hand operated machine
which is of simple construction and can turn out 200 blocks
in a day. When you have a machine going you will need help
to operate the machine and move the completed blocks to the
drying area. You will also need a space big enough to
accomodate the blocks while they are drying.

When you are manufacturing concrete blocks you will
naturally want to add other concrete products to your line.
There is a strong demand for bird baths, sundials, garden
furniture, patio slabs and a variety of other products. You
can add greatly to your profits by offering these
additional products to your customers. The markup on these
is often much more than on cement blocks. Plans and
instructions are available for all these items and they are
certainly worth adding to your business line of products.

The small business which you started part time in your
garage can in a relatively short time become a full time
very profitable enterprise. The sky is the limit depending
on how hard you are prepared to work at it. Go to it and
soon you will be making a far better income than you could
expect at any job.

It's What Outside That Counts Too!

Fri, 10/10/2008 - 22:18
It's What Outside That Counts Too!

- The Importance of Packaging

An old adage states:  "It's what inside that counts". In
today's age, it is not always true - especially in the
jewelry industry.

Imagine a beautiful gemstone ring placed in a simple box.
Or perhaps an ornate necklace wrapped in a cardboard box.
Sounds drab, doesn't it? A beautiful piece of jewelry
deserves a beautiful packing. There are many advantages of
good packaging. Here are a few advantages of packaging for
jewelry:

1.Packaging helps show off the piece of jewelry in an
attractive manner.

2.Packaging also helps to keep the jewelry piece in a safe
manner.

3.Packaging is an excellent branding opportunity for the
jeweler.

4.Packaging helps the buyers identify the designs of their
jewelry - most famous designers are well known for their
excellent packaging.

5.Good packaging is also helpful when the buyer intends to
gift the jewelry item to someone else. It also adds value
to the piece of jewelry, along with a certain charm.

So, how does one go about creating a good image of oneself
(especially as a jeweler) with the use of packaging?

Here are a few tips for creating optimal packaging for
jewelry:

1.Use your company logos and colors in the packaging design
- this will help in the process of establishing your
jewelry business as a brand.

2.Limit your message to the most important design elements
- remember that often, less is more.

3.Make sure that the design of the package fits in with
your product range and business - be creative.

4.Be different - make sure that your product packaging is
different from your competitors.

5.Use your packaging and branding to create a
differentiating feature. For example, you can use different
packaging methods for differently priced product ranges.

6.Choose the appropriate packaging method - this will
depend on the product on a very large scale.

7.Do not skimp on the quality of the packaging.

8.Integrate the packaging with your branding and
advertising initiatives.

9.Follow the various packaging trends - choose the one
which is right for you, but at the same time also remains
contemporary.

10.Make sure that your store personnel are properly trained
in the various methods of gift packaging.

The advantages of having good packaging for your jewelry
are many and with these tips you can easily find your way
around designing an optimal and attractive looking
packaging system for your jewelry pieces.

Apart from what is inside the package, what is outside
makes a lot of difference as well.

Do You Have A Passion For Business?

Thu, 10/09/2008 - 18:07
Do You Have A Passion For Business?

How awful you feel, after receiving the news that your job
is on shaky ground, due to the slow economy, after 10
years. You decide right on the spot, to look for a business
to own. Being the boss and making your own schedule has
great appeal. You're sick and tired of getting nowhere.
It's time that you do something about being on the
unemployment line, while your boss takes a three week
yearly vacation, with plenty of money in his pockets; yours
remain empty. Although this job pays for most bills, not
wanting to make any detrimental moves that would leave my
dependable income, would not be a wise.

If you were to challenge your business passion today, you
would see all the possible business areas to own, to
improve your financial status to provide personal
satisfaction. Even though your job is in jeopardy now,
owning a business can be a frightening leap. On the pro
side, you are in charge, calling all the shots. On the con
side, there is a possibility of failure. In fact, it's
already proven through analysis that what you want from
your own business in personal terms is to become
financially stable, first. How do you start?

When you are in the driver's seat, you first want to start
with a passion for your business, which brings you
pleasure. Enjoying what you do, will greatly increase your
success, better than in a field that is lukewarm by choice.
Just think. How would you feel when your job closed its
doors? Could it have been attached to a yawning line of
work? You don't want to leap before counting the cost, for
any new business adventure.

Suppose you've a passion for cycling, what's preventing you
from opening and promoting a cycle shop? Chances are you
would probably do very well online. Try it.

Your goal objective, for financial success is in the front
seat, but it must be balanced with interest. Before making
any decisions or plans, choose activities and subjects that
fire your passion in business, to satisfy your heart and
meet your financial goals. It doesn't matter who you are or
what your interest is, there are plenty of businesses out
there to own, that are profitable. If you have the love and
a passion for your business, look out, success tends to
follow, right at your heels.

Painting Business - How To Make $30 - $70 Per Hour Doing Small Simple Drywall/Plaster Repair Jobs

Tue, 10/07/2008 - 05:47
Painting Business - How To Make $30 - $70 Per Hour Doing Small Simple Drywall/Plaster Repair Jobs

Making $350 - $500 a day as a house painter is not as easy
as some would have you believe in the
residential/commercial realm - even if you are a larger
contractor with a crew. But if you know a few
drywall/plaster repair secrets, making this kind of money
is very possible. I know. I have done it. Let me explain.

As a painting business owner over the years, I have found a
niche in my business where people will have problems with
their drywall or plaster and they are totally clueless on
how to fix it themselves. Sure, you will come across those
who tried, but the end results always turned out to be
butt-ugly!

A lot of the drywall in homes built from the 1980?s and all
the way up to today have issues. Things like water damage,
loose tape seams, nail pops, etc. One common reason for
water damage is because of a leaky upstairs shower.

Also, it is not uncommon for a new home to have a problem
leak somewhere on the roof that is maybe letting water in.
The water travels down the wall and wrecks part of the
ceiling and wall in a lower room in a short period of time.

Maybe the customer wants to sell their house. They get the
roof leak fixed and now this is where you and I come in.
You have done some free advertising like word-of-mouth, you
get referrals, you have a small ad in the phone book or
from online advertising, etc. and you get a call.

Next you go over and look at the problem. In their front
foyer you see a couple of minor tape seams that are loose
and a small section of textured ceiling that needs to be
fixed and re-duplicated using a common crows foot texture.
The customer has touch up paint left over for it. They are
motivated to get it fixed so they can sell the house and
buy another one.

You eyeball it as about a days labor. You offer to repair
it for say around $335.00. They say yes and you schedule it
for the next day or whenever.

You come the first day for about an hour and tear out the
bad, do a quick deep-fill and put a fan on it overnight to
help it dry. Then you go back the next day and you spend 6
hours re-coating, and drying it with a heat gun or
hairdryer etc. You do the job in 7 hours total and your net
profit is $320 out of $335 because materials needed was
basically just some drywall compound, gas to get back and
forth and they had leftover paint.

Other scenarios may be older homes that have broken
plaster. These can be surprisingly easy and fun to repair.
Again, they call you, you go over and look at it. You count
up the time (8 maybe 10 hrs. or so) and materials (usually
dirt-cheap) and you give them a figure of $500 - $600
because of the size of the repair.

They give you the go ahead and you pencil them into your
schedule. You finish the job in 9 hours and you make 95%
profit. Other common plaster repairs may be large cracks in
plaster ceilings. A common problem that can be easy to
repair if you know how.

Other common drywall jobs may be texturing walls and
ceilings. Two guys working together can make some good
money at this. There are also small jobs hanging and
finishing sheet rock in basements or garages. They may want
you to paint it afterwards as well.

People do not know anything about drywall/plaster repair.
They expect it to be somewhat costly. Jobs look more
complicated than they are but since you know how to do them
its duck soup for you!

You go in and spend 1-3 hours tearing out the old part like
a surgeon, patching and doing a deep fill. You go back the
next day for a few more hours, maybe back again a third day
to finish, paint, etc. and get paid.

If you look in your phone book you will see small display
ads under drywall or plaster repair that say "We Love Small
Jobs" or "No Job Too Small". Sure they like small jobs -
this is where the easy money is. Small, 7 - 10 hour repair
jobs that command $30 - $70 per hour.

If this type of business interests you, you can do it as a
profitable sideline, or full-time business. You can have a
buddy or your wife or one of your kids be your partner as
well.

What Your Cash Flow Stinks? Making Money Online is about Cash Flow

Mon, 10/06/2008 - 19:31
What Your Cash Flow Stinks? Making Money Online is about Cash Flow

Cash flow is when YOU actually get paid money

Not the other way around...when you pay someone else. Too
often, online businesses end up getting into a negative
cash flow position. They end up paying out more money to
every Tom, Dick, and Harry who they think can help them
make money online. All that really happens is more money is
going out of their bank accounts than actually is going in.
Sound familiar?

Cash flow is the biggest business necessity for anyone
starting out. Cash flow, when it runs short, indicates that
there is a serious problem.

Cash flow is crucial to the survival of an online business

In the long-term, a viable online business must eventually
get profitable or find some investors to keep giving you
cash to make up for your losses. Unless, you are the next
scientist with the answer to cold fusion, you are unlikely
to get outside investment for your small business venture.

Making money online requires getting into a positive cash
flow position as soon as possible or else you'll be burning
through your own cash, bank accounts, and credit cards.
This situation hurts, hurts, really bad.

Most people want to make money online and get rich

Of course, everyone does but just getting by with a few
hundred dollars a month in positive cash flow would go a
long way to being successful with a business venture.
Having ample cash on hand will ensure that the wheels of
the business keep turning. There must be enough cash to
continue marketing efforts, re-invest back into the
company, sink into new R & D, and most importantly to
provide the owners with the life style they seek.

Cash flow isn't the same as profit and loss

Believe it or not, a company can be profitable while
experiencing cash flow problems that drive it to
bankruptcy. Cash flow is a popular way to see how well a
company is performing excluding specific line items or tax
strategies caused by accounting practices. Cash flow is a
critical area for all companies to manage, improve, and
forecast. However, it means different things to different
organizations. Cash flow is different from profits. Profits
don't guarantee money in the bank. Money in the bank is the
most important ingredient to daily operations.

Making money online; living by profit numbers and sales
goals

To be perceived as a value and a source of positive cash
flow, online marketing efforts must align with sales
objectives. One can't get caught in the trap of
exaggerating their revenue forecasts only to realize later
that there is no marketing budget to support it.

Sales may generate revenue, but that revenue may be delayed
in receivables or it may be earmarked for inventory
purchases. Meanwhile, employees, hosting expenses,
advertising, and monthly bills must be paid.

All business growth steams from positive cash flow

If at all possible, an online business owner should seek
out an opportunity where no inventory must be purchases and
maintained. To remain the most flexible, inventory
management, money collection, and product fulfillment
should be handled by a third party. These situations
provide the best situation for an online business owner to
remain in a positive cash flow position.

Profit growth does not necessarily mean more cash on hand

Profit is the amount of money you expect to make over a
given period of time. Profit and loss is only one component
of your cash flow. You have to have a clear picture of how
each of the other areas affected your cash flow each month
in order to understand, take control, and plan
strategically around cash flow. Profit within a company is
not a guarantee that the company can develop or even
survive. A lot of new businesses fail due to lack of cash
flow.

Increased cash flow means more funds to grow your business
Improved cash flow means there is more money in the bank
that is immediately available to re-invest in new assets or
growth opportunities. Increasing your online marketing
budget just a little can have a tremendous result long term.

Try taking a look at viral marketing challenges and avenues
where a little physical effort on your part will drive much
more targeted traffic to your online business offerings.

Leverage online advertising that doesn't kill cash flow

Increased or better designed advertising may be one of the
cash flow solutions that can make an impact on one's
business health. A free placement of your ad in a popular,
manual traffic exchange could be a wise investment of your
time when sales seem to be flagging.

Traffic exchanges are often the first stop for new online
marketers. If you are starting out, you are looking for
free and inexpensive ways to get traffic to your website
which in turns begins to build your positive cash flow.
Traffic Exchanges are great tools.

For home business owner, his list of prospects is the most
valuable asset. Traffic exchanges are an excellent way to
drive traffic to your site and boost search engine
rankings. Some of them even pay you for surfing.

Positive cash flow is a sign of a healthy online business

Positive cash flow means you have enough cash coming in. It
is over and above what you have going out. It is important
to keep track of good and bad uses of your limited cash
flow. This is a very logical and straight forward math
problem. It is mind boggling how many online businesses
keep plugging away each month throwing money into a hole
hoping a money tree will sprout.

Getting cash flowing right from the beginning will make a
world of difference

Positive cash flow for a company means everything. Cash
flow means no more worrying and fretting about the amount
of funds that are coming in and the amount being used up
keeping the company thriving. Cash flow means being able to
re-invest in new ways to grow your business. Cash flow is
an enabler for healthy, balanced life and a company that
will actually make money online.

Cash flow is king for any business. I had a real problem.
No money coming AND a lot of money going out was draining
my bank account. My business was dead. This amazing, free
report showed me how to make money online...FAST. Read it.
Follow it. It works -- http://www.DomainExperience.com

Drive Your Entrepreneurial Dreams into the Size Customers Need

Tue, 09/30/2008 - 08:12
Drive Your Entrepreneurial Dreams into the Size Customers Need

Whenever I meet people who want to start businesses, they
usually are thinking in terms of a size for their
operations that won't serve their customers very well. When
that happens, a business will achieve only a few percentage
points of its potential.

Why leave so much opportunity behind?

People don't see the opportunity.

But with continuing business model innovation, even
too-small plans can grow up to gain the required size and
focus that's needed. Here's an example of how a small
operation grew rapidly to become the right size and shape
for its best customers:

Iron Mountain started out as a regional data and paper
records storage service, based in the New York and New
England areas. Auditors had been concerned that computers
have appropriate back-up records in case of failure, and
usually insisted that companies employ off-site storage.

The ideal location for such off-site storage was a cave
because security cannot be better, which just happened to
be what Iron Mountain had to offer as its first storage
facility. Since trucks were carrying data storage back and
forth from customer locations and there was plenty of empty
space in the cave, it was logical to bid for the paper
storage business as well.

Gradually, management began to see that it could provide an
outsourcing business for customers' records and information
management. But it wouldn't do any good unless Iron
Mountain could serve all of a customer's needs. Served by
many tiny companies, the industry was ripe for
consolidation and an improved business model.

Bell & Howell had the same idea, and had started in this
direction by purchasing the Bekins records storage business
in California. Soon, the company was acquiring small
operators across the country. But Bell & Howell decided to
do an LBO, and didn't have the resources to continue this
strategy for Bekins.

So Bell & Howell sold the Bekins business to Iron Mountain.
Now, almost by serendipity, Iron Mountain became the only
national vendor of these services. The company could add
value to local storage companies when it acquired them by
bringing in national account volume, and more professional
management of outsourced customer accounts. Soon, business
was growing like topsy.

Without continuing business model innovation, however, Iron
Mountain might easily have ignored the Bekins opportunity
and the importance of handling all the needs for firms with
a national footprint.

What are you doing to be sure that your business model
fulfills what customers need?
